Today is the anniversary of the death of
William Franklin, the last loyalist governor of New Jersey, who fled to England after the
American Revolutionary War. His principal claim to fame, though, was that he was the illegitimate son of
Benjamin Franklin. Bill and Ben did not get on in their later years, and according to at least one historian, who tells a tale of dubious provenance, Bill had an early brush with death:
