Banned In Leviticus

The Bible's Book of Leviticus famously states "[t]hou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination," which is where the Bible prohibits homosexuality. (A parallel statement in Leviticus is here. The Bible, including the New Testament, mentions homosexuality or sodomy 5 other places and in Deuteronomy, 1 Kings, and 2 Kings refers to cult prostitution which could involve homosexuality -- it makes no explicit references at all to lesbian sex). But even a cursory reading of Leviticus would revel to anyone with a clue that it consists of the ancient ramblings of a primitive tribe. The verse immediately before that prohibiting men laying with men prohibits "let[ting] any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech." Here's a list of some other things Leviticus prohibits that may be applicable to the modern man or woman:

  • Eating fat or blood (3:17)
  • Failing to testify against any wrongdoing that you’ve either witnessed or been told about (5:1)
  • Touching an unclean animal (specifically, cattle (tame animals), beasts (untame animals), and "creeping things") (5:2)
  • Touching human uncleanness (5:3)
  • Carelessly making an oath (5:4) or swearing falsely (6:3)
  • Letting your hair become unkempt or keeping it uncovered (translations differ) (10:6)
  • Tearing your clothes (10:6)
  • Leaving holy places when you're annointed (10:7)
  • Drinking alcohol in holy places (10:9)
  • Eating an animal which doesn’t both chew cud and has a divided hoof (cf: camel, rabbit, pig) (11:4-7)
  • Touching the carcass of any of the above (11:8)
  • Eating – or touching the carcass of – any seafood without fins or scales (11:10-12)
  • Eating – or touching the carcass of - a wide variety of birds (11:13-19)
  • Eating – or touching the carcass of – flying insects with four legs, unless those legs are jointed (11:20-22)
  • Eating any animal which walks on all four and has paws (11:27)
  • Eating – or touching the carcass of – the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon (11:29)
  • Eating – or touching the carcass of – any creature which crawls on many legs, or its belly (11:41-42)
  • Going to church within 33 days after giving birth to a boy (12:4)
  • Going to church within 66 days after giving birth to a girl (12:5)
  • Having sex with a woman during her period (18:19)
  • Making idols or “metal gods” (19:4)
  • Reaping to the very edges of a field (19:9)
  • Picking up grapes that have fallen in your vineyard (19:10)
  • Stealing (19:11)
  • Lying (19:11)
  • Holding back the wages of an employee overnight (19:13)
  • Perverting justice (19:15)
  • Showing partiality to either the poor or the rich (not sure how Jesus supposedly got around this one) (19:15)
  • Spreading slander  (19:16)
  • Doing anything to endanger a neighbour’s life (19:16)
  • Seeking revenge or bearing a grudge (19:18)
  • Mixing fabrics in clothing (19:19)
  • Cross-breeding animals (19:19)
  • Planting different seeds in the same field (19:19)
  • Eating fruit from a tree within four years of planting (19:23)
  • Trimming your beard (19:27)
  • Cutting your hair at the sides (19:27)
  • Getting tattoos (19:28)
  • Not standing in the presence of the elderly (19:32)
  • Mistreating foreigners – “the foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born” (19:33-34)
  • Cursing your father or mother (punishable by death) (20:9)
  • Marrying a prostitute, divorcee or widow if you are a priest (21:7,13)
  • Slaughtering a cow/sheep and its young on the same day (22:28)
  • Working on the Sabbath (23:3)
  • Blasphemy (24:14)
  • Inflicting an injury; killing someone else’s animal; killing a person must be punished in kind (24:17-22)
  • Selling land permanently (25:23)
This is but an abbreviated list -- I've omitted most or all of the archaic practices it prohibits, as well as redundancies, to just hit the highlights that could still apply to people's lives. I've adapted it from a longer list here, but even that list is truncated. Levticus really has to be read in all its glory to understand how paleolithic and silly it is.
