A Flat Lens -- With No Distortion

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences website announces that its scientists have developed a flat lens and that is has no distortion. The lens works by diffracting light at the surface by minute grooves in the gold layer of a silicon and gold wafer that is only 60 nanometers thick.  A flat lens could have extraordinary advantages in manufacturing and camera and lens size and weight as well as avoiding the aberration that arises from a curved lens. Imagine the telescopes! Via MetaFilter.
